Taypie Hendricks

Taypie Hendricks is one of the most recognised & well-known ex-residents of Claremont, owing to his long-standing position as a hawker at Claremont Station. Hawking in the same location for almost 60 years, Taypie started the Claremont Reunited Alliance along with Yusuf Davids. They both approached Boebie Cassiem & other ex-residents to assist them & from there the CRA was born.

Taypie was born at 1 Harvey Road, his home named Rosmead, to parents Fatima & Bashir Hendricks and was one of thirteen children – 9 girls and 4 boys. When he married Goirunisa Deirdricks, they moved to Second Avenue, where they lived until they were forcibly removed.

His family were initially moved to Retreat, but he eventually purchased a home in Mitchell’s Plain, where he lives today. He maintains that he ought to retire, but loves his work & meeting people so much that he has yet to consider retirement seriously.

Taypie has strong connections to Claremont to this day. He still attends the Harvey Rd Mosque, and is the person whom ex-residents will always find at his stall at Claremont Station, ready to chat about the old days or arrange reunions for those who live far away. Some of his fellow-hawkers who own stalls at Claremont started their careers as his assistants over forty years ago.

He (Faizel Wagenaar) was hawking for me before – since he was a kid, after school, he would come and help me. And he controlled ALL my money. I trust him. I was about 25 or 24, and he was about 15 or 16.” All of them still hawk together at Claremont Station today, though Faizel now runs his own large fruit stall.

Taypie’s position as a hawker for almost 6 decades has offered him a unique vantage point from which to observe the history shifting in the Claremont area. He is passionate about retaining the beautiful memories that exist in Claremont & has a wealth of stories to share about the changes and developments which he’s experienced & observed throughout the years.

Taypie has seven children.
